School of AI FAQ

We hope you’re enjoying this first release of School of AI. This FAQ provides information to help you have the best experience possible while interacting with the historical characters. Please select a topic below for more information.

To speak to a School of AI character, complete the following steps:

1. Approach the character.
2. Target the character’s name with your hand controller or cursor, and then select the Ask me button that appears.
3. When the ellipsis appears, immediately speak to the character, and then wait for a reply.

Each AI character can talk to only one user at a time. If someone else is talking to an AI character, you must wait for the current response to finish before you can ask your question. If you’re the person who is currently speaking to the AI character, you can select Cancel to interrupt the AI character’s response.

If characters don’t respond to your questions or misunderstand what you say, you may need to complete the following steps to change your default voice recognition language:.

1. Open your tablet or menu.
2. From the icons on the right-hand side, select the cog.
3. On the Settings page, select User Preferences.
4. From the Voice Recognition Language list, select English (United States).

The current state of the art has been trained on Western English accents. These will be supplemented in future and have a broader recognition capability.

Characters in the School of AI have three mitigations in place to prevent any offensive responses:

• OpenAI used a system of reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) to train the underlying GPT. This essentially involves humans reviewing responses and adjusting the GPT to remove offensive choices.
• The chosen historical figures were not known for being overtly offensive. As such, when the GPT impersonates the historical figures, it would be out of character to provide offensive responses.
• The prompts that we set for each character include clear guidance about what topics to engage with and which topics to avoid.
